Warnings, NOTAMs and Local Avoids

The following is a précis of the UK AIP for EGHJ dated 21 Mar 02.  Please consult the AIP for full information.

Opening Hours Bembridge ATC attempts to maintain licensed cover throughout airfield opening hours.  In spite of this, there are occasions when it is necessary to vary the licensing hours.  Please check latest NOTAMs if this might affect your flight (eg Flight Schools and Charter Ops).

Warnings Wind effect hazard: Severe turbulence can be encountered on the approach in wind speeds above 25kts from wind direction 090° through south to 230° and tailwinds can be encountered at both ends of the runway in southerly winds.  Pilots should exercise care when operating in strong winds and should be aware of the likelihood of wind shear.

There are numerous trees and obstacles both within the airfield boundary and in the surrounding area.

Pilots should exercise caution when taxiing due to the narrow taxiways.

Airfield activity During week time working hours the airfield is used by Britten-Norman for demonstration and test flying.

A gliding club is located to the South of the main runway.  Tug launched glider flying also takes place outside published operational hours.

Model aircraft flying takes place from ajoining fields outside operational hours.

Local avoids When flying in the Bembridge local area, please be sure to avoid over flight of the local population.  Particularly sensitive areas include Bembridge village and nearby Seaview.

Care should also be taken when operating south of the field due to glider activity and the proximity of Sandown airfield.
